World Premiere of

An English Tragedy

by Ronald Harwood

REVIEWS:

'It tells a gripping true story with simplicity and power, and somehow manages to move the audience while also making its flesh creep'

'The hot newcomer Richard Goulding gives a virtuosic performance as John, superficially charming, witty and camp in the best Brideshead manner, but with a constant edgy neuroticism about him and sudden scary glimpses of the truly psychopathic'

'The combination of English reticence and raw anguish put me in mind of Rattigan at his greatest'
The Daily Telegraph

May 1945: victory in Europe, and a Labour landslide. English traitor John Amery is arrested in Italy and brought back to London for trial. If convicted, he faces the death penalty. But his father is a senior politician; surely the Establishment will look after its own...

From the Oscar-winning writer of THE PIANIST and THE DRESSER, the play is a powerfully gripping tale of wartime treason and conflicting loyalties, based on an extraordinary true story. This is a powerful and disturbing new play from leading British playwright Ronald Harwood, whose forthcoming film THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY opens in the UK in February.

Ronald Harwood’s plays include THE DRESSER, TAKING SIDES and QUARTET. Previous screenplays have included THE BROWNING VERSION (with Albert Finney), BEING JULIA (with Annette Bening and Jeremy Irons) and Roman Polanski’s version of OLIVER TWIST (with Ben Kingsley).

The play is directed by Di Trevis, acclaimed director of Pinter’s REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST at the National Theatre and designed by Ralph Koltai, internationally acclaimed theatre and opera designer. An Associate Artist of the RSC, Ralph was a Sergeant with the British Intelligence Corps during the Second World War in the War Crimes Interrogation Unit, based at the London District Cage.

Ronald Harwood's forthcoming film THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and a BAFTA for Best Screenplay. The film has also won Golden Globes for Best Director and Best Film not in the English Language.
